Alchem is an association the purpose of which is to advocate and promote the use and development of free (as in Freedom) resources for chemical sciences.

Free Software

Free Software is a software respecting four rules:

• the freedom to run the program, for any purpose
• the freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (access to the source code is a precondition for this)
• the freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor
• the freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (access to the source code is a precondition for this)

July 2001, APRIL members discussed about Free Software for Science, at the RMLL 2001 in Bordeaux. A conclusion is to draw up a list of Free Software. Some months after, in 2002, few people wants to go further. They want to build up a Free Resource Web Portal for Chemical Sciences. The bases of the Alchem project were launched.

In 2003, a website is designed, the logo is realized by Bruno Bellamy and a mailing list is created. A talk about Free Software for Chemical Sciences is presented at the RMLL 2003.
